Great quotation.
ReplyDeleteAt the risk of being crassly political, it brings to mind a telling aspect of the American demographic. At low levels of formal education, Americans are mostly Democrats. As their level of formal education rises, to "some college" or a bachelor's degree, they tilt very Republican. At that point they hate paying taxes, but aren't savvy enough to know how much of the money Halliburton and Co. are taking. They think it's going to single black women who have had nine kids on the dole, each by a different father. But then, when you get to the people who have been to graduate or professional school, liberal Democrats make a big comeback. Oh, but I forgot: The longer they stayed in university, the more time they had to be brainwashed.

I'm definitely going to repeat the Montaigne quotation; it's priceless. H.L. Mencken was a good one for such soundbites among "Murkuns," as was Ambrose Bierce.
