The other night, quite late, I ran across something on the public TV channel I'd never seen. I didn't even catch much of the beginning, but it was the Rolling Stones in a studio setting and looking very young. There was some sort of picked audience, and among them I kept glimpsing John Lennon, Yoko Ono, various members of the Who. It turns out that it was a taped concert made in 1968 or so, intended for TV, but not released at the time because The Stones didn't like the quality. I guess now that they're old and feeble, they realize it's better than they'll ever do again! I don't know, but it has been released since about 1994 and I STILL didn't run across it anywhere! I just don't keep track of music like I used to do. It was fun to see The Rolling Stones do 3 songs in a row: Can't Always Get What You Want, Sympathy for the Devil, and Salt of The Earth. Apparently there were other musicians who played earlier, and I missed it. But that's okay. At least I filled a tiny hole in my education. The Internet informs me that it's available on DVD these days. My first reaction to that a minute ago was to think, "Well I don't have a DVD player." But in fact I do; there's one on this computer that I've never used. I wonder if it works? I don't expect I'll find out, though. As I don't spend much time on music any more, I also don't spend much money, either. Sigh. I'm a goddamn bump on a log, apparently, and mere raindrops erodes me even more!

I guess I should mention that this blog turned 20 years old last month.
It’s true that I haven’t been writing much for the past few years, but then

I use my computer as my media center (dvd, books, cds, etc). Most things these days you can buy at a lesser price for download.
ReplyDeleteGlad you found a recording you hadn't seen before on tv!
My PC has a DVD player, too, but it doesn't have the "driver" program installed. And I'm too damned cheap to buy it! Besides, a full-sized TV version is cheaper, which is what I DO have!
ReplyDeleteBut I can sure burn the hell outta CD's on the ol' PC!(We need MORE words, that are just letters, don't you agree?)
OMG, you're a fucking alphabet soup, but that's ok.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Alisa...my PC is every kind of entertainment to me.
ReplyDeleteI have the one of the best sound cards and five speakers just for listening to MP3s and watching DVDs of music concerts in particular.
I used to be a maniac about expensive stereo equipment, but I sort of lost the entertainment bug. Used to grow my hair long, too, but that's too much trouble, too. My life is in past tense, it seems.
ReplyDeleteRock N' Circus has some great bits on it. I love when John Lennon refers to Mick as Michael. Other performers include Jethro Tull, The Who, Marianee Faithfull, and Dirty Mac (one-time band made up of Richards, Lennon, Yoko - few others). Yoko does some of the most gawd-awful cat screaming I ever heard in my life. At the time the Stones were worried that The Who blew them off stage. I like The Who but this performance does nothing for me. The Stones had been up like 24 straight hours at the point of filming. Goood luck at the end for Brian although he does pull off some nice slide if I recal correctly. I don't think anyone knew what to make of Jethro Tull - Ian Anderson looks like a wild man - more blues based at this point. Taj is always great, even today. You can also just get the CD. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteI paid $20 extra to have a DVD player installed on my computer when I bought it and I've never used it once. My Rolling Stones story is I had a chance to go to their concert in Omaha a couple years ago but didn't get the tickets because I couldn't think of anyone who'd want to go with me. Then I found out their opening act that night was my mother's favorite band - Brooks & Dunn. Who woulda guessed?
ReplyDeleteBrooks, etc. with the Rolling Stones? Unfathomable. The Stones have done some country tunes, I guess, but they've never fit the groove.
