Conviction

George Bernard Shaw:
"Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it."

  1. It's all we have to bet our hopes and dreams on...without, we'd have to keep all our money in our pockets.

  2. What you're talking about has nothing to do with the subject at hand. I'm not even clear what your hopes and dreams have to do with your pocket money. Perhaps we were each talking to ourself.

  3. GBS must have been referring mainly to England (or Britain), I guess.

I've never been able to understand patriotism. It's pretty much of a gamble where we are deposited on this fair planet, and if we're lucky enough to land in a decent place, I think we can feel grateful, but not proud. Proud of the achievements of our countrymen - that's a different thing, and reasonable.

The time for patriotism proper will be if and when aliens from outer space land here - then we'll
all be Earth patriots. That I'll understand.

Sorry to waffle on....it's a hobbyhorse of mine (and GBS's apparently).

  4. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then I must not what you're talking about.

Perhaps Bernard shouldn't be so cryptic. I took him at face value.
